Ronnie James Dio 70th Birthday by Geezer Butler

Re-posted from Geezer Butler’s official website geezerbutler.com

Today, July 10th, Ronnie should have been celebrating his 70th birthday, and probably would have been if he’d had his health checked regularly. I once asked him if he’d ever thought about retiring- he said he would make that decision on his 70th birthday- that is why today is so poignant.I think I know what his decision would have been……

Ronnie was a Cancer, I didn’t know that until today. He is near top of the list of my all time favorite pagan musicians. I recently found his original doo wop bands CD reissue Ronnie And The Red Caps formed at his high school in Cortland, New York in 1957. Ronnie could sing anything, by the time he was drafted into Ritchie Blackmore‘s (another pagan musician atop that same list) Rainbow in 1975 he had been at singing professionally for 18 years. Listen to how well Ronnie could sing in 1958 at 17 years old, like I said I  think Ronnie could sing anything.

Here’s a single from Ronnie And The Red Caps on youtube –  R.I.P. RDJ
