The Verdict on iOS music Creation

I’ve been working with the iPad Pro for the better part of 6 months. I’ve purchased 3 DAW’s, Garageband for iPad, Auria and Cubasis. They sound pretty Legit, Cubasis having the overall best sounding Virtual instruments (GarageBand a very close 2nd). If I were recording electronic Music only, I wouldn’t use anything other than an iPad. You can do just about everything you can carry out on a MacBook Pro in that realm.

For making organic analog music using Real Drums that have true groove, it fails blatantly. I’ve purchased the Real Time alternatives to Superior Drummer and BFD, Sonically they all fall VERY short but one. The best sounding acoustic Percussion with any decent workflow was Garageband’s x drummer. If you use it for Logic X and you like the sound you’re golden.

I like the sound of X Drummer, but it’s not very flexible in the choice of sounds and tones. For instance I could never get Full Kit sounds like some of the Steven Slate libraries I own for Mac and PC. You can get true non-quantised human groove like a Superior Drummer or BFD. That’s really important to me.

I also like how every thing plugs in seamlessly with AU. With the release of iOS 10 AU became more useful and feature rich. I rarely used AudioBus even back under iOS 9 with the Previous version of AU, the exception was Auria. Using X Drummer in GarageBand for iPad as a plugin to Auria or Cubase is a walk in the park with AudioShare. It’s actually easier and more seamless to use plugins, even whole DAW’s plugging into each other in iOS (more so than a PC).

I think you can make really great Acoustic instrument Demos giving the restrictions of iOS music creation. I don’t think you can create something professional and polished for Pandora Radio etc. The two pieces that are missing from all 3 DAW’s are:

Flexible good sounding Percussion creation somewhat resembling the Mac and PC world.
The feature that allows one to do several “takes” or “comps” of the same passage of music.

I believe as time moves forward these issues will be solved sooner more than later. There’s too much open market opportunity here for software companies.

EDIT: I forgot to tag this with categories and Keywords and originally posted this a few days ago, I was really tired! I reposed with the right SEO information.

My Friend Leo’s Gas!

My Friend Leo has been having serious G.A.S. (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) to the nth degree. I haven’t seen him in 4 weeks now that our old gig is no more for the time being so I had him over to hang out on Saturday. He came bearing his latest decadent ebay purchases, it was so awesome to play these Jems all afternoon. They are as follows:

  • 1958 Silvertone U1
  • 1960 Silvertone U1 bass
  • 1965 Straotone by Harmony
  • 1939 Vega Vitar Lap steel
  • Dan Electro Eric Clapton Reissue

When I picked up the Vega Vitar it rang like an acoustic. I kept telling Leo “dude this has to be hollow or have a major chamber inside.” He popped the bottom off, one big hunk of of Mahogany. Amazing! The bass is really something, totally Paul McCartney Hoffner Beatle tone, really something special. The 1958 Silvertone (Dan Electro) plays really well for a non truss rod piece and sounds brilliant. The Clapton reissue sounds KILLER! It doesn’t play as well as the 1958 U1 but if my buddy, who’s also incidentally a Luther in training in his third year with a builder here in town, can get it playing nice it will be something very special. The 1965 Stratotone is really unique, it sounds like the perfect slide guitar and much of my fretboard time on it Saturday was utilized playing just that.

All in all pretty exciting guitar geek stuff! If you’re a guitar nerd that is….. I snapped a couple of pictures just to make you all out in WordPress land Jealous :P I’m hoping to get some more time playing on them and maybe cutting some tracks with that sweet sounding Bass.

Enjoy!

Changing ISP’s really is a pain in the babooshka!

Most people who work in tech are aware how evil Comcast corp is. They break laws like I change my socks and have the moral compass of a turd that cant be shined. When I caught Comcast trying to hijack my web browser with the malware they’ve so publicly touted in the tech press I picked up the phone and kindly told them to fuck off. I may be writing this from my iPhone but I feel pretty good about firing a company thats breaking Federal law and trying to take command of my home office network with shitware (thats a technical term for you noobs).

Unfortunately gaining access with a new isp is not a quick process these days. I need static ip’s for my needs and a 100 mbs speeds. This will take a week but I’m ok with that. Overall, I still feel really good because my decision was warranted. My firewall logs don’t lie and my proxy catches just about everything. It’s sad that laws only govern people in this day and age while evil shits such as the telcos and energy conglomerates can do as they please.

Comcast, I truly say unto you GFY!
